I n North Carolina, as in the rest of the U.S., a way of life, a whole landscape, is rapidly disappearing: the small, family-owned farm. Those who remain on their farms are the idealists, the stalwart few.

The Carrboro Farmers' Market Photography Project is a salute to the people who plant, cultivate and harvest fruits and vegetables and tend livestock for us from the immediate farm areas surrounding Carrboro/ Chapel Hill. Some provide a respectable income for their loved ones; some continue to farm in the face of economic hardships. Many must look to other sources of income or have spouses with jobs. The faces in these portraits convey pride, joy, fatigue, satisfaction, cautiousness--a gamut of human emotions. To me they are nothing short of heroes.

Twenty-one farmers were selected and photographed in a makeshift studio set up in the Rescue Squad's cavernous garage near the Carrboro Farmers' Market in the summer of '94.
